Home Missionary Society

In the meeting of the South Travancore Church Council held at Thilivalai in 1899 the letter written by the Rev. Hacker was placed for discussion and he proposed a resolution concerning the same. This resolution was passed in the church council meeting held in Neyyoor on the 14th, 15th of March 1900. The H.M.S. was born on the 15th of March 1900. The first president of the society was Rev. V. Sathianathan. This society was established to carry on evangelistic work in this part without any foreign help.

The first church was established in Mugathalai near Quilon. In Kanyakumari District the first church established was at Kokudivilai. In 1965 a historical step was taken by H.M.S. to surrender developed churches to the Diocese and by this decision in 1990 about 50 churches were surrendered apart from 3 churches surrendered to the South Kerala Diocese before 1970. In 1910 the H.M.S. was divided into two as South Keral H.M.S. and Kanyakumari H.M.S. On an average two churches every year are established and through this around two hundred people come to the fold of the Christian community.

Presently there are 64 Churches. A few new congregations are conducting services under the shade of trees, house verandahs and thatched sheds. All the work of the HMS is carried out through prayers and financial support of believers who also help to build Churches. The second Sunday of March each year is followed as HMS Sunday by the Diocese.
